Behavioural and physiological non-technical skills assessment in simulated electricity distribution tasks

Abstract: Simulation has proved to be a useful method to improve learning and increase the safety of work operations in several domains (healthcare, road safety, etc.), both for technical and non technical skills (NTS). However, the observation, assessment and feedback about these skills is particularly complex, because the process needs expert observers and the feedback is often provided in judgmental and ineffective ways during the post-simulation debriefing. In our research, we wanted to apply simulation to the electric domain as a new method to enhance the NTS and foster best practices. We developed and tested a set of observation and rating forms of the NTS behavioural markers of electric workers. In addition, we outlined the framework for observing behaviours based on non-verbal cues, like movement in the operational environment. The analysis of social signals and face-to-face communication patterns (e.g., kinesics, proxemics, interpersonal synchronization), could be combined with performance metrics (e.g., feedback on the NTS, self and peer assessment of performance efficiency, etc.). By automatically quantifying human behaviour using wearable and non-invasive sensors, we can find relationships between sensor data and team performance and thus identify optimal behaviour patterns that would lead to improved and safe performance.

Gestures Saliency: a Context-based Analysis

AbstractGestures’ expressivity, as perceived by humans, may be related to the amount of attention they attract. In this paper, we present two experiments that quantify behavior saliency by the rarity of selected motion and gestural features in a given context. The first one deals with the current quantity of motion of a person’s silhouette compared to a brief history of his quantity of motion values. The second one focuses on the motion speed of a person compared to the motion speed of other persons around him. Considering both features (speed and quantity of motion) and contexts (space and time), we compute a rarity index providing cues on the behavior novelty. This can be considered as a preliminary step to an expressive gesture analysis based on behavioral changes.

Psicologia dell’errore umano

Investigating visual discomfort with 3D displays: the stereoscopic discomfort scale

Abstract: Notwithstanding their widespread diffusion, stereoscopic media have important drawbacks in terms of viewers’ visual discomfort. Current assessment methods are mainly based on measures of objective parameters such as eye physiology or media characteristics. On the other hand, subjective methods only evaluate the personal experience related to the physiological symptoms. In this pilot study we developed and validated the Stereoscopic Discomfort Scale (SDS), a self-assessment tool for the subjective evaluation of physiological and psychological symptoms related to stereoscopic viewing. The results show evidence of internal consistency, unidimensionality and construct validity of the scale. Since SDS scores were also strongly correlated with facets of presence, we argue that the SDS could be a useful tool for the investigation of users’ experience related to stereoscopic media.

User-centered evaluation of the Virtual Binocular Interface

Abstract: This paper describes a full-body pointing interface based on the mimicking of the use of binoculars, the Virtual Binocular Interface. This interface is a component of the interactive installation “Viaggiatori di Sguardo”, located at Palazzo Ducale, Genova, Italy, and visited by more than 5,000 visitors so far. This paper focuses on the evaluation of such an interface.

Towards Real-Time Affect Detection Based on Sample Entropy Analysis of Expressive Gesture

Abstract: Aiming at providing a solid foundation to the creation of future affect detection applications in HCI, we propose to analyze human expressive gesture by computing movement Sample Entropy (SampEn). This method provides two main advantages: (i) it is adapted to the non-linearity and non-stationarity of human movement; (ii) it allows a fine-grain analysis of the information encoded in the movement features dynamics. A realtime application is presented, implementing the SampEn method. Preliminary results obtained by computing SampEn on two expressive features, smoothness and symmetry, are provided in a video available on the web.

An investigation of the minimal visual cues required to recognize emotions from human upper-body movements

Abstract: This paper illustrates a research project on the visual cues that
account for the ability to recognize emotions from upper-body movements. We describe an experiment that evaluated whether human observers could discriminate between high and low arousal emotions by means of impoverished displays representing the motion and shape information of the head and the hands. We investigated the effects of figure-ground segregation and inversion of the displays on (i) the recognition of emotion, (ii) the perception of biological motion and (iii) the animacy experience.
